College Readiness Program - Year 1

“College readiness has helped me to work hard and believe in God…as well as keep my grades up in school.”

“Because of College Readiness I am ready for high school.”

We launched the College Readiness Program in October of 2009 following a period of researching similar programs and best practices. Our motivation was to find a way to support and encourage our students as they navigate their high school and college careers. All too often the youth of depressed urban communities get frustrated with the educational process and drop out.

Circle Urban designed the program so that the students will be involved in the program multiple times per week through their middle school and high school years. Meeting time is balanced between social time, homework time/academic support, Bible study, and field trips.

One of the things we learned in our research was that one of the significant activities contributing to college success is something as simple as exposing children to college campuses in their late elementary school years. Broadening their vision and horizons helps them to desire and believe that they can succeed. Our field trips are designed to enlarge their vision and include college campus visits, career outings to a variety of businesses, cultural activities, and community service projects.

At the end of the school year we asked the students to complete a survey about their experience in the program. Following are just two of the questions and a few of their responses.

How has College Readiness helped you? “It helped me think about the long term goals in life.” - “This program has helped me because it gives me a safe place to go after school, and it also helps me academically, spiritually, and emotionally.” - “It’s helped me by being more comfortable in my spirituality and also helping me manage my time.” - “College Readiness has helped me by showing me what a real Christian should do, and how they are supposed to act and abide by the rules of God. College Readiness has given me confidence that I can still have fun in my life while being a Christian. Lastly, I’ve learned that I should treat others the way I would want to be treated.”

Because of College Readiness: “I go to Church more and I try not to sin.” - “I am prepared for high school and college.” - “I have gained more respect for myself and my religion. I greatly value being a Christian more, now that I have learned and talked more about it.” - “I feel more comfortable around my peers and more comfortable with discussing Jesus in front of them.”

We launched the program for 8th graders and early high schoolers who were part of our wrap-around programs (those programs that supplement learning done in school). Late in 2009 we received a matching grant for the program that thus far has generated funds to add a 7th grade group this past January.

Please note – We are within the period to receive funds for a significant matching grant for the program. Your contribution to the College Readiness Match will help us to meet the match allowing us to continue to develop and expand this vital program.
